Mersin Climate by Month: When Is the Best Time to Visit
The Mersin climate is considered one of the most comfortable on the Turkish coast, but it has features that are better to know in advance. The summer is long and hot, the winter is warm and rainy, and the spring is short and very pleasant. Below we look at what the weather is like in each season, when it is best to come and view apartments, and how the climate affects the choice of a home.
Mersin climate: the general picture
Mersin lies on the Mediterranean coast, and the climate here is typically Mediterranean. Summers are hot, almost without rain but very humid, while winters are mild, with rain and a few cold days. Snow in the city itself is almost unknown, it falls in the Taurus mountains that you can see from the coast. Most of the rain comes between November and March, and from June to September rain is rare.
Exact figures depend on the year and the district, so check current data on the website of the Turkish State Meteorological Service. A general description of this type of weather is given in the article on the Mediterranean climate.

Winter in Mersin: December, January, February
In winter the daytime temperature is usually around ten to fifteen degrees, and nights are cooler. It is not freezing, but because of the damp air and the wind the cold feels stronger than the thermometer shows. It rains, sometimes heavily, and on such days there are puddles and traffic jams. There are also plenty of sunny days, and in clear weather you can walk along the promenade in a light jacket.
The sea in winter is cool, around seventeen to eighteen degrees, so the swimming season is closed. This matters for housing: older buildings can be damp, and central heating is not available everywhere. Many residents heat their flats with air conditioners that have a heating function, so when you choose an apartment ask how the building is heated.
Spring: March, April, May
In spring the Mersin climate shows its best side. The temperature rises from about fourteen degrees in March to almost twenty-five at the end of May, rain becomes rarer, and the city turns green and blooms. April and May are considered one of the most convenient times for a trip: it is not hot yet, the sea is warming up, and hotel prices are lower than in summer.
For property buyers this is the ideal time for viewings. You can walk around the properties, drive through the districts and compare new builds without suffering from the heat. If you are choosing an apartment, look at our property catalogue and plan several viewings for one or two days.
Summer: June, July, August
Summer in Mersin is hot and humid. The daytime temperature stays around thirty degrees, in July and August days above thirty-five are not unusual, and at night it hardly cools down. Humidity is high, so the heat is harder to bear than dry heat. By August the sea warms up to roughly twenty-eight or twenty-nine degrees, and swimming is pleasant from June to October.
At this time life moves to the evening: people walk along the promenade after sunset and spend the day in the shade or in air-conditioned rooms. Electricity costs rise noticeably in summer, as we wrote in the article about living in Mersin. If you do not like heat it is better to choose another season for your first visit.

Autumn: September, October, November
Autumn is long and warm. In September it is still hot and the sea is very warm, in October the weather becomes mild and comfortable, and in November the rain and coolness come back. Many newcomers consider October the most pleasant month: you can still swim, but the heat has gone. Many seasonal events and fairs take place on the coast at this time.
Autumn is also convenient for moving, because you can settle in calmly before the winter rains and prepare the apartment for the cold season in advance.
Approximate air temperature by month
Below are average values rounded for orientation. The real weather in a particular year may differ by a few degrees.
- January: about 10 degrees, February: about 11.
- March: about 14, April: about 17, May: about 21.
- June: about 25, July: about 28, August: about 29.
- September: about 26, October: about 22, November: about 16.
- December: about 12 degrees.
When is the best time to come
The best time depends on the purpose of the trip. For viewing apartments and getting to know the districts April, May, October and early November are suitable: it is comfortable to walk and you can see the city as it is most of the year. For a beach holiday June and September are ideal when the sea is warm but the heat is not as heavy as in July and August.
If you plan to move, come for a reconnaissance trip at least twice: once in summer to feel the heat, and once in winter to see the damp and rainy side of the city. This way you will understand whether the Mersin climate suits you every day, and not only on holiday.
How the climate affects the choice of an apartment
The weather is directly connected with the comfort of a home. Here is what to pay attention to when choosing:
- Orientation. South and west windows heat up more in summer, while an apartment with a sea view and cross ventilation stays cooler.
- Floor. Upper floors get more wind but also more sun, and lower floors can be damp in winter.
- Air conditioning. Check whether units are installed and what their energy class is, because this affects the bills.
- Humidity. In damp flats mould can appear in winter, so look at the condition of the walls and the ventilation.
- Balcony and shade. A glazed balcony and awnings noticeably reduce the heat in summer.
New complexes are more often built with these factors in mind, but developers differ. You can compare companies in the ranking of Mersin developers.
Mersin climate and health
Many newcomers notice that the warm Mersin climate helps those who dislike cold winters. There are fewer colds, more walks in the fresh air and more sun. But humidity and heat can be hard for people with heart problems or blood pressure issues, and for small children and the elderly. In such periods it is worth drinking more water, avoiding the midday sun and airing the home in the mornings and evenings.
People with allergies should take the spring blossom into account: in April and May there is a lot of citrus and other pollen in the air. If you are prone to allergies, bring medicine with you and find out the address of the nearest clinic in advance.
Climate and the cost of living
The weather also affects the budget. In summer the main expense is electricity for air conditioners, in winter some residents spend on heating. The better an apartment is insulated and shaded, the lower the bills. Modern buildings with good insulation and efficient windows are cheaper to maintain, and this is worth considering alongside the price per square metre.
There is a pleasant side too: thanks to the mild winter you hardly need warm clothes and expensive winter shoes, and vegetables and fruit at the markets are fresh and cheap all year. We will cover costs in more detail in the article on the cost of living.
Myths about the climate of Mersin
- “It is always summer here.” No, in winter there are rains, wind and cool days, especially in the evening.
- “The heat is unbearable all year.” The hardest months are July and August, while spring and autumn are very comfortable.
- “You cannot swim in winter, so there is nothing to do.” Winter is convenient for walking, outdoor sports and viewing property without the heat.
- “The climate is the same everywhere.” In the districts by the sea it is cooler thanks to the breeze, while inland and in the foothills it can be hotter and drier.
Practical tips for the Mersin climate
The Mersin climate rewards preparation: in summer take light clothes, a hat and sun cream, and in winter do not forget an umbrella and a warm jacket. Do not plan long walking viewings in the hottest part of the day, choose the morning or evening. If you come in winter, ask how the apartment is heated, because in the cold season this matters.
Summary
The Mersin climate suits those who love warmth and the sea and are ready to put up with a humid summer. The best time for a first trip and property viewings is spring and early autumn.
